Nov 13, 2013 Healthier Cookies with 5 Easy Tips We all love our cookies but we are also always on the search from healthier alternative so we won't pack on the pounds. Here are 5 healthy tips to make baking healthier without compromising taste! 1. Butter vs. Oils- Swap out some of the butter, margarine or shortening for heart-healthy oils, such as canola oil or olive oil or pureed fruit or even vegetables. For every tablespoon of butter you replace with heart-healthy oil, you eliminate at least 5 grams of saturated fat from your batch of cookies. 2. Add Fiber To The Batch- Replacing your all-purpose flour with whole-wheat flour gives your cookies about four times the amount of fiber in every batch. 3. Stay Away from Sodium!- Aim for no more than 1/2 teaspoon salt per batch of cookies. If you’re on a salt-restricted diet, try reducing the salt in a batch of cookies to 1/4 teaspoon. 4. Replace Unhealthy Fats- Replace some of the butter with nontraditional cookie ingredients, such as nonfat plain yogurt, nonfat buttermilk or even fruit juice! 5. Stay Away from Artificial Flavors- Stay away from ingredients that contain hydrogenated oil. Look for all-natural food dyes, such as red dye made from beets, available in natural food stores or online. Or try a drizzle of chocolate or a sprinkle of finely chopped nuts to give cookies extra appeal. look for all-natural food dyes, such as red dye made from beets, available in natural foodsstores or online.
